Most academic journals do not care how old you are. They care whether the work is novel, whether the method holds up, and whether the writing meets the standard of the field. That is the good news and the hard news at the same time: nothing formally stops a high schooler from publishing, and nothing about being a high schooler earns any leniency once the manuscript is in review.
This guide covers the venues that realistically accept high school authors, what each one demands, and how to avoid the growing number of journals that will publish anything for a fee.
The three categories worth knowing
Not all publication is equal, and the difference matters enormously to an admissions officer who knows the field.
Professional venues are the journals and conferences where working researchers publish. IEEE conferences, Springer proceedings, and Elsevier journals fall here. A high schooler who lands one of these has cleared the same bar as a graduate student, because it is the same bar. This is the category that carries real weight.
Student-specific journals exist to publish pre-college work. They are legitimate, peer reviewed, and a genuine accomplishment. They are also understood by admissions readers to be a different tier, because the comparison set is other high schoolers.
Predatory journals will publish essentially anything in exchange for a fee. They often have official-sounding names, promise review in days, and email students directly. A publication here is worse than no publication, because anyone who checks will recognise the venue.
Professional venues that accept high school authors
None of these have an age requirement. What they have is a quality requirement.
IEEE conferences
IEEE runs hundreds of conferences a year across computing, engineering, signal processing, and biomedical fields. Acceptance rates vary enormously by conference, from under 20% at the flagship venues to more forgiving at smaller specialised ones. Accepted papers are indexed in IEEE Xplore, which means the work is permanently citable and anyone can look it up.
What it takes: an original contribution, a method section that a reviewer can reproduce, and results compared against prior work. Conference papers are typically six to eight pages.
Why it is worth it: IEEE Xplore is a public index. A link to your paper there is verification that requires no one to take your word for anything.
Springer proceedings and journals
Springer publishes conference proceedings across nearly every technical field, along with a large journal catalogue. Lecture Notes series volumes are a common landing spot for solid conference work.
What it takes: similar to IEEE. Springer venues tend to want the related-work section done thoroughly, so a weak literature review is a common rejection reason.
Elsevier journals
Elsevier's catalogue is enormous and ranges from extremely selective flagship journals to specialised ones with a narrower audience. The realistic target for a first paper is a specialised journal in a well-defined subfield rather than a flagship.
What it takes: journal review is slower and more demanding than conference review. Expect months, and expect at least one round of major revisions.
Field-specific conferences
Computational biology has ISMB and ACM-BCB. Machine learning has a dense conference calendar. Most fields have an equivalent. Conference deadlines are fixed, which is actually helpful: a hard date forces a finished manuscript in a way that a rolling journal submission does not.
Journals built for high school researchers
These are real, reviewed, and a legitimate credential. Treat them as a strong outcome rather than a lesser one, particularly for a first paper.
- Journal of Emerging Investigators (JEI) — reviewed by graduate students and postdocs, free to publish, strong feedback culture. Biology-heavy but broader in practice.
- The Journal of Student Research (JSR) — accepts across disciplines including humanities and social sciences. Charges a publication fee.
- STEM Fellowship Journal — Canadian, peer reviewed, focused on student data science and STEM writing.
- National High School Journal of Science (NHSJS) — free, peer reviewed by students and advisors.
- Curieux Academic Journal — broad subject range, fee-based, high acceptance.
The honest distinction: JEI and NHSJS are free and selective enough that acceptance means something. Fee-based venues with high acceptance rates are legitimate but read differently to anyone familiar with them.
How to spot a predatory journal
The number of these has grown sharply, and they target high school students deliberately because students are less likely to know the signals.
Warning signs:
- Unsolicited email inviting you to submit, often flattering and vague about your work
- A promise of review in days rather than weeks or months
- A fee that appears only after acceptance
- A name that closely imitates a well-known journal
- An editorial board with no verifiable affiliations, or names that do not respond
- Claims of an "impact factor" from an organisation you cannot find
How to check: search the journal in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), look for it in Scopus or Web of Science, and search the name plus "predatory." Look up two or three editorial board members and confirm they exist and acknowledge the role. If a venue is real, five minutes of checking will confirm it. If five minutes leaves you unsure, that is your answer.
Which venue should a first paper target?
The instinct is to aim for the most prestigious name. The better strategy is to match the venue to the work.
If the work is genuinely novel and the method is sound, target a professional conference. Rejection there costs you a few months and a great deal of useful reviewer feedback, and acceptance is a credential that holds up anywhere.
If the work is solid but incremental, a student journal is the honest fit, and a published paper beats an unpublished one that was aimed too high.
If you are unsure, ask someone who publishes in that field regularly. Venue selection is one of the things that is genuinely hard to judge from the outside, and getting it wrong is the most common reason good high school work goes unpublished.

Do I need a university affiliation to submit? No. Most submission systems ask for an affiliation, and your high school is a valid answer. Some students list an independent research program instead.
How long does publication take? Conference review typically runs two to four months from submission to decision. Journal review is slower, often six months or more with revisions. Plan around the deadline, not the other way round.
Does it cost money to publish? Professional conferences usually charge a registration fee if your paper is accepted, and open-access journals often charge an article processing charge. Legitimate venues state these upfront. A fee that appears only after acceptance is a warning sign.
Is a student journal worth it compared to a professional venue? It is a real credential and better than nothing by a wide margin. A professional venue carries more weight because the comparison set is professional researchers. Choose based on where the work honestly sits.
